Concept to Reality: A Guide to Project Drawings

Bringing your building project to life involves different types of drawings, each serving a unique purpose. Think of them as steps on a ladder, guiding your project from an idea to a finished reality.

Let's look at the three main types:

1. Design Drawings: Your Vision Takes Shape

  • What they are: Detailed blueprints that refine your ideas into a complete architectural design. They show how your project will look and function – from room sizes to material choices.

  • Why they're important: They allow you to truly visualize and confirm every detail before we move forward.

  • Key Information: Detailed floor plans, elevations (outside views), sections (cut-through views), and overall site layout.

  • When you'll see them: Once your initial ideas are set, forming the basis for planning and detailed design.

2. Planning Application Drawings: Getting Official Approval

  • What they are: Specific drawings prepared for submission to your Local Council. Their main job is to show how your project impacts its surroundings and complies with local rules.

  • Why they're important: You need these to get legal permission (planning permission) to start your building work.

  • Key Information: Site location, proposed layouts, and external views (elevations and sections) that clearly show changes and their impact. Includes a written Design & Access Statement.

  • When you'll see them: Submitted to the Council after your design is developed.

3. Construction Drawings: The Builder's Instruction Manual

What they are: The most detailed and comprehensive set of drawings. They are the precise how-to guide for your builder, covering every single dimension, material, and connection needed to construct your project.

  • Why they're important: They ensure accuracy, quality, and efficiency on-site, guiding every step of the building process.

  • Key Information: Highly detailed plans, elevations, sections, and zoomed-in 'detail drawings' of specific components. They also include information from structural engineers and other specialists.

  • When you'll see them: After planning approval, ready for pricing and construction to begin.

We handle all these drawing stages, ensuring your project progresses smoothly from your initial dream to a beautifully finished build.
